While our total world view must, of course, be consistent with our best available scientific theories, it is a great mistake to read off a metaphysics superficially from the theory’s overt appearance, and an even graver mistake to neglect the fact that metaphysical presuppositions have gone into the formulation of the theory, as it is usually framed, in the first place.
