(doc, 9 pages) Robert Griffiths has recently addressed, within the framework of a ‘consistent quantum theory’ that he has developed, the issue of whether, as is often claimed, quantum mechanics entails the existence of long range influences that act instantaneously over long distances. He argues, on the basis of his examination of certain non-locality arguments, that such nonlocal influences do not exist. However, his examination was restricted to hidden-variable-based arguments that include in their premises some essentially classical-physics-type assumptions that are basically incompatible with the precepts of quantum physics. One cannot logically prove properties of a system that is logically incompatible with the premises of the proof. Griffiths mentions the existence of a certain alternative proof that does not involve hidden-variable, and that uses only macroscopically described properties. He notes that he had examined in his book proofs of this general kind, and concluded that they provide no evidence for nonlocal influences. But he did not examine the particular proof that he cites. An examination of that specific proof by the methods ratified by his ‘consistent quantum theory’ indicates that the cited proof is in fact valid within that restricted framework. This apparently necessary existence, within the ‘consistent’ framework, of long range essentially instantaneous influences constitutes a serious threat to the claim made by Griffiths, and by others, that his framework is superior to orthodox collapse-based von Neumann quantum theory because it does not entail instantaneous influences, which were claimed by them to be generated by logical mistakes, and to not exist. |
